Broken English: Single Women in Film
On our weekly walk up Curson Canyon, Joan and I ran into James and Marty and exchanged info on our latest viewings. It's a weekly ritual. They all disliked Zoe Cassavetes' Broken English, mainly on the grounds that it wasn't well-made. While the movie meanders, I suspect that it made them uncomfortable. The plight of the lonely single woman is not one that many people want to deal with, really. I lived the drinking dancing dating life in my 20s in New York before I moved to L.A. and got married at age 29. I remember that anxiety all too well. Was there something wrong with me?
Broken English rings true, and Parker Posey is unflinching in the not always appealing lead role. (Her leading man, Frenchman Melvil Poupaud, will break out.)
While following the Thinking Blogger meme, I came across some terrific blogs I already know and one that was new to me, possibly because the blogger Lisa Rosman had taken a long hiatus. Well, she's back and writing about Broken English and a lot of other things. Wow.
One sign of a good critic is that they write things that you agree with, thought you already knew, but hadn't quite figured out yet. She got me thinking about Broken English, women's pictures, the plight of the indies and lonely single women. Not bad for one entry.
Meanwhile, good ol' feminist Gloria Steinem has a modest proposal: prick flicks.
