I posted a wee blog item over the holidays that set folks at the big Internet movie sites speculating. It was fascinating to see how they spun the Superman: Man of Steel story--and elaborated on what I had reported. I fill in a few of the blanks here.

Agree on your Supe take. The reboot mostly worked, and Routh did a fine job channeling Christopher Reeve. But where do they go from here? If it goes ahead, it might be for the right reasons -- that Singer has a new story to tell. It certainly wasn't a cash cow the first time, and why would the second Superman feature outgross "Returns?"

Superman Returns was explicitly sold as NOT a reboot, but a continuation. It worked great as the finish of a trilogy of the Donnerverse, but terrible as a reboot.
Where can they go from here, that doesn't do terrible damage? Does Warners want to make a movie where Superman's child gets killed off, making him MORE depressed and mopey than in RETURNS? Or where a precocious kid lives to take over the story line? Or where it's discovered the child isn't his so Lois was banging some other guy at the same time as Supes? Or where Lois' husband does a sudden turn from a great guy into bad guy jerk, so she can blamelessly leave him for Supes, thus undercutting the entire heart of the first film? Or where Lois is a cold b*tch who leaves a great guy for Superman? Or where Superman is a homewrecker? Or..or...or?
It's all so very ugly. Singer has given Warner no choice in this matter but reboot. RETURNS was not a launching pad, but a eulogy. Not a beginning of a trilogy, but an end to one.

To move forward the only changes needed will be that Jason(Lois' son) was somehow affected by the kryptonite, that Lex Luthor held close to him, temporarily giving him super powers. There will be more than one villain in the sequel and this will present a situation where Superman cannot save both Jason and Richard. In the end Richard will tell Superman to save Jason. This will allow for more sequels to follow.

So the husband becomes the hero of the second movie as well as the first, upstaging Superman yet again, and making Superman fans doubly angry?
Out superheroing the titular hero for the second go around? Leaving his memory as the love of Lois Lane's life and irreparably damaging the 70 year history of Superman holding that place? Emotionally scarring mother and child, while burdening Superman with eternal feelings of guilt and inadequacy? Sounds like a knee slapper.
It's sure to pack in the audiences for a superhero movie even more emotionally ponderous and tragic than the first movie. There is nothing summer action audiences love more than romantic tragedy and family dramas weighing down their dumb fun.
And anyone wonders why there will be a reboot? The question is when. Five years or ten years?

Oh, and:
All of which still ignores the issue of the child. Just because the child isn't specially powered anymore doesn't mean Superman can ignore him. Superman as Deadbeat Dad isn't what audiences want to see. But Superman with precocious moppet fills them with even more dread. Wesley Crusher hatred won't have anything on that.
So will Warners play the dead child card or the Bobby Ewing/Dallas "It was all a dream!" card? Or will they throw up their hands and just hit the restart button?
The earliest a direct sequel to SR can open is in 2010, four years after SR. The Hulk reboot is coming with a five year gap.
Warners has a couple of options. They can:
1. Spin off continuity from the Superman in Justice League.
2. Spin off continuity from the Superman in their tv show Smallville.
3. Wait an extra year (2011) and do full scale continuity reboot ala Hulk.
4. Continue the continuity of SR with a sequel and pray the boxoffice falls a mere 30% on a film with twice the action made with half the budget. And somehow change the tone of the film from heavy family drama into light hearted Transformers fun.

There are so many avenues this story could follow. For instance, Richard leaves Lois' because he realizes she will always love Superman. Jason is Richard's son and yet he leaves him as well. As far as Richard being a hero or upstaging Superman, there can be more than one hero in a movie. "They can be a great people Kal El, they only lack the light to show them the way".

Justice League is no longer moving faster than a speeding bullet. The Executives at Warner Bros. let the options lapse on the young cast that director George Miller had chosen to play DC superheroes. The studio confirmed Wednesday the project is on indefinite hold and may be scrapped altogether.
Cast members were informed late Tuesday their options would not be exercised.
Warner Bros. is now looking to move ahead with the sequel to Superman Returns as soon as the writers strike is settled.

I wanted to love Superman Returns, but, aside from its astronomical budget, the problems were...plentiful. First, Singer had no understanding of the characters. Superman not only deserts Lois and the Earth for 5 years but is almost constantly depressed. Which is out of character for any version of him, especially the one he's created this sequel from (I won't even start on the mistake of making this a sequel to Superman II -- of which, the Donner Cut is wonderful). Lois, a tough city girl, can't even hail her own cab in a scene AND waited 5 years before she wrote the Pulitzer article her character hinges on -- which also makes no sense. Not to mention the unforgivable act of having the little boy see his mother (Lois) get beaten-up (the "Super" payoff did NOT make up for it). And the "emotion" of the film was forced and juvenile -- like 14-y-o's pretending to be adults. Ultimately, there was no joy, no excitement, no clever banter, and yeesh, Superman didn't even give Lex his comeuppance at the end. What a sad, sad mess.
