Writers Guild Noms Announced
These Writers Guild nominations are hugely informative. The writers are a very good indicator of where the Academy writers are going.
This tells us that Juno, Michael Clayton, No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Into the Wild and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly are moving full steam ahead in the Oscar best picture race. Zodiac's inclusion today is a surprise. (Oscar ballots are due Saturday.)
It is highly unusual for three women to be nominated, all for original screenplay. So kudos to Nancy Oliver (Lars and the real Girl), Tamara Jenkins (The Savages) and Diablo Cody (Juno).
Sorely disappointed today are the folks behind American Gangster, Sweeney Todd, Kite Runner and Atonement, which are continuing not to get the awards attention they were counting on.
On the documentary side, while we knew Michael Moore's Sicko would be in the awards hunt, filmmaker Alex Gibney is having a good day, as he executive produced No End in Sight and wrote, directed and produced Taxi to the Dark Side.
