Oscar Watch: Foreign Branch Up for Revamp
The foreign branch of the Academy is under fire, and producer Mark Johnson, the chair of the committee, is trying to make some changes.
Here's David Ansen; Jeffrey Wells; and The Reeler. And my column on Johnson. UPDATE: The Counterfeiters director Stefan Ruzowitsky defends the foreign nominees. I have watched The Counterfeiters--which reveals an aspect of the holocaust we have not seen before--and Sergei Bodrov's stunning epic Mongol: both are must-sees.
Here's a trailer for the controversial omitted Palme d'Or winner 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days.

Clearly, 432 is a masterpiece, and if it needed any more proof, that the Oscars are NOT about cinematic merit, this is it.

Not a great trailer (it doesn't capture the measured cadence of the movie) but how it couldn't make the top 5 foreign entries is unbelievable. Easily in my top 3 overall for 2007.
