Dante Books Cohen at New Beverly
When I was in my 20s living on 110th Street in Manhattan, I was thrilled when director Larry Cohen wanted to shoot a movie at my apartment. It was Q: The Winged Serpent, starring Michael Moriarty. The crew took over my place and left huge soot marks on the walls where the lights had been. I was too naive to ask for a new paint job. I think they paid me about $1500. As they were leaving I got a gander at the script. "Roach-infested fleabag apartment," it read. Oy.
If you want to catch up on some of this great indie filmmaker's stuff, director Joe Dante (Gremlins) has included Cohen in his programming at LA's New Beverly. Cohen’s 1976 expose of the FBI, Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover, will have its first LA showing in 25 years on April 13, 14, 15 at 9:25 PM. Cohen will introduce the film with a Q&A to follow. Starring Oscar winners Broderick Crawford (as Hoover), José Ferrer and Celeste Holm, along with Dan Dailey (as Clyde Tolson) and Rip Torn, it was originally released by AIP and features a classic musical score by Miklos Rozsa. The film was shot at FBI headquarters, at the FBI Training Camp at Quantico and at Hoover’s own home – but without Bureau censorship.
