I explain the Batman voice to you
[Posted by David S. Cohen]
With all the carping over Batman’s voice in “The Dark Knight” (my colleague Peter Debruge calls it the “butch voice”) I would like to point out for the record: As any self-respecting Batman nerd (I plead guilty) knows from devouring the hardcover about-Batman’s-toys book that came out with “Batman Begins,” there is an explanation for the voice. They just haven’t put it in the movies yet.
So in the spirit of public service, I have written the missing scene fragment.
No doubt the original of this scene is sitting on a cutting room floor somewhere. If not: Chris, Jon, David: If you want it, call my agent.
INT. BATCAVE
ALFRED
It’s all well and good to cover your face with graphite, but what about your voice? Even criminals watch tabloid television. Someone’s bound to recognize the voice of Bruce Wayne
BRUCE
They’ll never get the chance. We’ve put a microphone in the cowl and a loudspeaker right here. (points to one of the hollow ears attached to the cowl.) It lowers the pitch and (speaking into the microphone, so we hear the Batman-voice) SRAMBLES THE VOICE PRINT
ALFRED
I see sir. Good thing you’re out to frighten the underworld, not impress movie critics.

I, for one, don't get what all the fuss is about. It's certainly no worse than Val Kilmer's.

Also, in several scenes it looks like you can see Batman wearing a mouth guard; which only makes sense for some one who's hobby is taking punches.

That's precisely what I tell anyone who complains about the voice. Using his normal voice would guarantee he would get pegged.
