Stan Winston Tribute
[Posted by David S. Cohen]
It was a bittersweet evening at the Nokia Theatre Wednesday night as friends and family gathered -- along with hundreds of Siggraph attendees -- for a tribute to the late, great creature artist Stan Winston. Sony Imageworks hosted the public tribute as well as a private reception beforehand that turned into a virtual who’s-who of the visual effects business.
Once the main event got under way, thesp Matt Winston, Stan’s son, reminisced about how dad used to put on ghoul makeup to scare little Matt.
“What made him happy was to scare me, and the world,” said the younger Winston good-naturedly. “It wasn’t just what he did for his job -- it was what he did to his family.”
Joining in onstage were: Shane Mahan of Stan Winston Studio, who revealed the shop will be remonikered Legacy F/X, partly in salute to Stan; John Nelson, who worked on Terminator 2 and was visual effects supervisor on Iron Man (Winston’s shop built the practical suits for the pic); and helmer James Cameron, who was Winston’s friend since the first Terminator film and his partner in the founding of Digital Domain.
Cameron said he remembered Winston telling him “Once you’ve shown it can be done, anybody can do it. The important thing is to be first.” In introducing a screening of Terminator 2, Cameron saluted Winston as “an amazing contradiction”
“He could be a 7-year-old,” said Cameron, “But he was also like the clan elder. He was the wise man.”
