Toronto Watch: Emmerich Earned Pride and Glory Gig
Noah Emmerich is a familiar face in the movies, from The Truman Show to Little Children.
The solid supporting player has been dogged by the success of his brother, Toby Emmerich, the president of New Line Cinema. Every time Noah gets a part in a New Line movie, folks in Hollywood assume that his brother handed him the job. "That's a painful irony of my doing New Line movies," says Noah. "It's an understandable assumption, but it couldn't be further from the truth."
Take Pride and Glory, the movie Emmerich is promoting with Edward Norton here in Toronto. Having done two films with Emmerich (Tumbleweeds), director Gavin O'Connor wanted to cast him in a family of cops led by patriarch Jon Voight. But no. "I always had him in mind for the role," said O'Connor. "The movie started and stopped several times. It fell apart after 9/11. They were very scared of the sensitivity of what was going on with the police and fire departments."
Toby actively refused to cast his brother in a part that required a movie star to boost overseas funding. "It's harder for me to work at New Line than anywhere else in town," says Emmerich, who first lost the role when the movie fell apart with Hugh Jackman on board. "I was in jobs before my brother was running to studio," he said. "I realize my brother can't go out of the box and put me in a movie. He takes care of the job the way he does. But it does rub salt in the wound when people say, 'So great, your brother gave you a job.'"
When Colin Farrell came on board under a new incarnation, the Irish star boosted Pride and Glory's marquee value enough that O'Connor could cast whoever he wanted for the role of straight-arrow oldest son. Noah got the call.
