Howard Talks Iron Man 2 on NPR
Weekend Edition's Scott Simon is in love with Terrence Howard. He does a major gush job on his show this weekend, but clearly Howard was putting a spell on him.
It's a great interview. Here's some video. Howard is a bit raw from the recent death of his mother, and the loss of the role of War Machine in Iron Man 2. "It was the surprise of my life," he says, confessing that he read about it in the trades, and wasn't expecting Marvel and his friend --is he referring to Jon Favreau?--to go back on their contract and their promises to him. He indicated that it wasn't about the money.
I admire Don Cheadle, who is replacing Howard in the role. But I thought Howard was fine, and I am still confused. What happened here? What was he promised? And what went wrong here?

Whoa...this wasn't Howard's decision? That SUCKS. Massively.
That moment in the first film when Howard lovingly fingers Stark's first prototype of The Suit, hesitates, and says "Next time, baby!" was so full of promise.
Sucks.

wouldn't that mean that he signed the first Iron Man contract w/o first right to reprise? A studio never wants to re-cast a major player in any movie.
Holmes refused to play her role in Batman because they couldn't agree on a new contract due to $$$.
Howard seems like a very sharp, honest guy...but there has to be a lot that we don't know.
Working in an agency and a studio, my only guess would be that Howard exceeded his time to reprise the role and his agent was playing too much hardball with Marvel/Paramount to the point where they were dangerously close to the start date.
As a fan of Marvel and the Iron Man franchise, I think everyone is upset with the re-casting decision. (and like you, i'm the biggest Cheadle fan in the world)

Cheadle is an awful choice. While not the biggest Howard fan, he was perfect in the role and did a great job. I'm not looking forward to puny Cheadle in the War Machine suit. Very disappointing.

Huh? Hm. Boy, I'd like to know the full story on this choice. I loves me some Don Cheadle, don't get me wrong, but I thought Terrence Howard was fantastic. I was really looking forward to him becoming War Machine. I totally thought that Terrence walked or something. I'm happy to hear that it wasn't his decision but I'm also sorry to find out that it wasn't his decision. Too bad.

I'm not very keen with the decision to switch the actor Terrance Howard to Cheadle, I think Marvel should reconsider this decision cos' as a fan from Latin America I also find kind of insulting to switch main character actors in every movie, what are they like Dc Comics, no, Marvel rocks. so they should make it happen.
