Superman Update

Supermanrouth7972Latinoreview cornered a DC Comics exec and tried to advance the status of the next Superman installment, but we still don't know where Bryan Singer and Brandon Routh and the writers are...

Meanwhile, how are Brandon Routh/Superman fans going to feel about their boy's role in Kevin Smith's potty-mouthed Zack and Miri make A Porno as a one-time high school jock star returning to his high school reunion with his gay porn star boyfriend Justin Long?

Are you serious?
Are you actually asking that?
Why would anyone be bothered by Brandon playing a gay character in a comedy??

oh, please. there is no way superman would pretend to be a gay porn star. unless, of course, it's to stop the nefarious plot of zack and miri to take over the world. if this were true the superman might just masquerade as a porn star 'man of steel', so to speak. i'm not surprised you did not see through superman's disguise. he's very clever, you know.

go superman! you've fooled anne into thinking you're a gay porn star now stop zack and miri from taking over the world. i love you (but not in a gay way [although i'm sure you knew what i meant -- you being superman and whatnot])

Doesn't matter seeing as he won't be reprising his role as Superman. If the franchise is to become the viable commodity that Warner's wants it to be- it has to move forward without any of the failure that was 'Superman Returns' and that includes the above mentioned Brandon Routh. While it may not be his fault that the film was not the success WB had hoped for- a 'reboot' of Superman can only happen with a clean slate. It happened with Eric Bana and Thomas Jane (Hulk/Punisher),it happened with Batman and Christian Bale and it can only happen with a new cast for the next 'Superman'.

If Routh is staying, then I am interested. Otherwise, I don't care.

I won't mind a reboot or sequel as long as they keep Brandon Routh as Superman.

It astounds me that anyone would even consider using Routh in another Superman movie after his complete lackluster presence in Superman Returns. The blame for the overall blandness of the movie certainly doesn't fall completely on Routh, but let's be real, as a big-screen Superman, he didn't have even close to the charisma and heroic appeal that is needed to carry off this iconic character.

WB can't seriously be considering Routh for a reboot. Nothing major against routh, but he shouldn't be superman for a reboot. I think Tom welling is the best choice now, give him the shot WB!

Tom Welling for Superman! http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/tomwelling4supes

Meanwhile, how are Anne Thompsons readers going to feel about their columnist's turn into a low level fan site blogger?
It seems to me that "renowned" journalists have a strange habit of dissing news and gossips from some websites, though often reporting them without citing them as sources and at the same time making fun of some of the same info, like a 14 year old boy on the net would do.
It's a schizo attitude.

I'm more interested in what Anne would find out when she checks this story out with her contacts at DC or WB.

You cant reboot a franchise but keep the lead actor of the lackluster movie franchise that caused the reboot in the first place. This seems like rather obvious logic but perhaps WB is missing the obvious again? If you keep Routh you might as well let Singer do the sequel because the public perception and reaction will be exactly the same.

You need 3 things for a new Superman franchise: 1. A director with a vision who puts the source material above his own ego, i.e. Christopher Nolan on the Batman films. 2. A qualified empathetic cast with good chemistry, i.e. no one from the Superman Returns cast, and 3. an update take on the character that takes into account the evolution of the character over the last 30 years.

As for Routh, I could care less what the guy does in his career. Best of luck to him, just dont let him or anyone else from Returns near the new Superman franchise.

Why hand the reigns of the new franchise to one of the culprits responsible for screwing up the last one? I've seen driftwood that's more charismatic than Brandon Routh.

If they insist on giving the lead in the new franchise to someone who's part of another incarnation, why not Tom Welling? At least his incarnation has been successful and kept the Superman character relevant in the mass media over the past decade. Plus he cant actually emote, which is helpful when you're acting.

Why would anyone want the failed Superman, Routh, back?

He tried and failed miserably. Move on.

My thoughts EXACTLY.

Yeah, Brandon is An Actor, and playing different types of roles is what Actors do, right?

And it's also Very encouraging to hear that Brandon is still in the running for the role of Superman for the next film. YAY! BRING ROUTH BACK, WB. HE was so awesome in Superman Returns (and I LOVE the film as well). He totally deserves to return to reprise the role that belongs to him now. HE IS SUPERMAN!! I just can't see anybody else in the blue tights and red cape now.

Sad but true, Anto.

I, for one, don't give a DAMN what character Brandon plays. Because he's doing just that - playing a character. Superman is a character. So is Clark Kent. So is his role in "Zack and Miri..." Gay, straight, superhero, best friend...it matters not.

Routh should return. He was one of the few good things about Superman Returns. Not his fault the script called for a bland, non-charismatic Superman. His Clark was excellent, though.

Anne, what kind of bigot are you? Your implications are disgusting. Brandon has portrayed homosexual characters before. In fact, MOST mainstream actors in Hollywood have played homosexuals at some point in their careers. It doesn't mean they are homosexual. Even so, there is nothing wrong with being gay. Take your bigotry and your disgusting slanted journalism someplace else. I can't believe Variety even allows you to incorporate those type of comments into your "news" blogs. Welcome to the 21st century, get a clue and try to remember that objectivity is key in journalism. Your message is dripping with homophobia and it is abominable!

My God... What's the matter with you, Anne?
What's wrong with an actor playing a certain type of role in a film? Actually, is there anything wrong with 'gay', for that matter?
Would you ask a similar question if an actor play a role of, for example, psychopath, a serial killer, a gang, etc, etc, or is it just 'a gay' you have a personal problem with?

Anyway....
If what Latino Review reported was true and if the reason Routh was at DC Comic's was because he's still in the mix, that would be a really great news, though, as you said, we won't know what the actual situation is until we hear WB's official announcement.
Still, so nice and encouraging to know there're so many people who want Routh to don the cape and boots in a next Superman film again. After all, he is 'the Superman' for many people now and was embraced enthusiastically even by the most critical of critics.
And pushing the release date to 2012 does make sense if they are really rebooting and re-casting Routh again, because that would reduce the risk of people getting confused, to some extent, I suppose. Though I'd still want a sequel to SR, with Singer as the director and with all the same cast.

There's nothing wrong with Routh's cameo as a gay porn star's boyfriend. In fact, I think it's commendable and shows Routh's self-deprecating sense of humor to take on that role considering the rumors that swirled about him during "Superman Returns."

I'm much more disheartened by the possibility of Routh returning as Superman. I have to agree with the sentiment that having Routh as Superman would be reminder number one of why "Superman Returns" failed to work. Even if he wasn't (entirely) to blame, he is the embodiment and symbol of "Superman Returns" (it was Brandon's face on all the posters and underoos after all. Not Bryan Singer's) so if you want to distance yourself from that picture, you don't bring back the guy who reminds everyone of said picture.

If WB is too nervous to go with an absolute unknown (coz face it, the ONLY reason WB would even consider Routh is because, even if it was in a failed production, "Routh as Superman" is a known, albeit potentially toxic commodity.) then they should go with another actor who embodies and symbolizes a current incarnation of Superman.

Yes, I'm talking about Tom Welling. The guy playing Superman every week at 8PM on Thursdays on the CW. If WB is so concerned with "making Superman relevant to a 21st century audience" why not give it to the guy who's been doing just that for the last eight years?

In summation, TOM WELLING.

I wouldn't mind a reboot, if Brandon Routh were to reprise the role. He's the only actor other than Christopher Reeve, that I truly believe IS Superman. He embodies the values that's crucial to the role. Critical reviews of Routh's performance have been generally positive, it's unfair to say that it's his fault that the movie was a box office failure.

And no, I don't have a problem with him playing a gay character, why would I? It's is job as actor to be diverse with his roles.

I don't remember Tom Welling playing Superman. He was 'Clark Kent', yes, but not 'Superman'.
Also, he has made clear, so many times and quite firmly, that he DOES NOT want to play Superman.
When will Welling fans listen to what the actor they're so much in love says???

Oh, big deal - he's playing a gay character.
Do we assume that actors portaying serial killers are ACTUALLY murderers?
No we don't.

I'd really like to believe that most people are intelligent to know the difference between fiction and reality.

Puh-leese... Daniel Day-Lewis, Dustin Hoffman, Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp, Hugh Grant, Heath Ledger, River Phoenix, Gael Garcia-Bernal, Javier Bardem, Christopher Reeve, Jake Gyllenhaal, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Cillian Murphy, Russell Crowe, Jack Coleman, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Al Pacino, Robert Freakin' Redford, Marlon Freakin' Brando, Bruce Willis, Forrest Whitaker, Linus Roache, Robert Carlyle, Charlie Hunnam, James Marsden, Scott Speedman, Michael Caine and Will Smith have all played gay roles at some point in their carreers. Gimme a break.

Oh, and "kent"? Get your facts straight... Tom Welling never said he didn't want to play Superman... otherwise, why would he have met with Ratner back in 2004 when he was still attached as director for the new Superman movie?

I'm very pleased with the lationreview news.

BRB!
http://www.bluetights.net/theplanet/showthread.php?t=28166

Get real. Brandon is just being an actor. He has a lot of different roles in the works. As a Brandon Routh fan I have no problem with him being a working actor.

I find your comments unworthy of the Variety Name you write for. Just about every top actor has at some point played a gay character. From what I have seen this 'extended cameo' part looks very funny as does the movie.

Can’t you do better than try to bait a divisive battle between fan groups? Perhaps you missed your calling and should join the McCain camp.

To answer your question, Anne, I'm very happy that he's been tryig to broaden his horizon as an actor, doing a role that he'd never done before.
I also would like to add that I wouldn't even have any problem IF he were a real gay, either. There are lots of great actors who are gay and are GREAT as actors, playing hetro-sexual roles without ANY problem at all, either.

So, I hope you now understand BR fans are not as narrow-minded as you might have been thinking, and I really hope you don't repeat the same or a similar question ever again, since this is the second time you tried.
Thank you.

Brandon Routh as Superman was about as interesting to watch as a scab healing over. I hope Latino Review really has to eat dirt over this one.

The rebooted Superman film needs a completely fresh start without ANY of the baggage from Singer's flop.

Only a dog returns to his vomit.

Anne, as J said in his post, many other actors had these roles, why keep stirring the pot with this? I still want Routh back, makes no difference to me, I still want him to be in the next Superman movie!!!!!

I don't care if Routh chooses to sell hotdogs at the Super Bowl so long as Super Man he is not. Kepp Routh away from the beloved Superman character so us fans don't have to bear witness to another teary weepy stalker in speedoes with a penchant for ridiculously trying to imitate Chris Reeve who was more of an actor in his ring finger than Routh and Bosworth could ever hope to be.
Same for you Singer- go make Usual Suspects part II for all we care just keep your warped vision away from the Man of Steel. How visionary- attempt to copy Richard Donner's film frame by frame shot by shot and then cover it all with the tag :'HOMAGE'...wow what a directing genius.

I hope Brandon Routh gets to repraise his role as SUPERMAN! He's my second fav Live action Superman of all time in between 1. Chris Reeve, and 3. Dean Cain. So hopefully these rumors bear fruit. I also hope he'll be able to cameo as Clark Kent in the GL movie.

FANTASTIC, yeah, Routh MUST return to don the blue tights and cape, HE. IS. SUPERMAN. Get it, WB? The guy was such inspiring casting! You won't find anyone better suited to the role of Superman and Clark, so you are doing the smart thing to keep him in the role. By God, the guy is the spitting image of Clark Kent. If he does't return, neither will I. Period. Besides, there is Marvel movies..

Brandon Routh is by far the ONLY one that can play Superman. I ask you this, what director do you know casts a charecter based on the actor's personality? I am not typically a comic book fan, but watching Brandon play Superman and the touching performance changed that. His senstivity to the role made me a fan for life. I don't think that WB will find another actor that will fill the shoes Brandon played. True some said that about Christopher Reeves, but it took 20 years to find the right actor. I think more then ever we need Superman as he is. A light of hope in times right now where we need it the most. I don't want to wait 20 more years for another one.
I personnally think that as an actor he should play a range of charecters, whether gay or stright, acting is about life. Brandon is just playing another chacter in life.

The above two posters are NOT REAL SUPERMAN FANS.
If Routh is their ideal Superman and they would not go see a new person playing the role then they can't possibly have any affection for Superman.
I'm sure Pierce Brosnan fans still went to see Casino Royale with Daniel Craig as James Bond. Brandon Routh is a less than mediocre actor,he was not convincing as Superman and he would not be able to convince ANYBODY that he is the Leader of the Justice League. Any woman who plays Wonder Woman would automatically appear to be superior to the boy swimmer Routh played in 'Returns'. I have a sister more suited to play Superman, so please PLEASE Mr Routh- stop posing as 'fans' and writing posts on how you should be brought back.

A few thoughts (random but related):
(1) Back in 2006, Larry King asked Brandon if he was worried about gay advocacy groups identifying with the Superman character. Brandon responded that everyone should be able to find something in the character and his ideals to identify with; it's the ones who can't that we should worry about.

(2) Perhaps WB has noticed that beyond the squabbling fan groups, the general audience (essential to the success of any blockbuster) identifies Brandon with the character.

(3) By making sure TDK didn't open within a week of Indy 4 or Iron Man, WB showed it had learned something about scheduling from its Superman Returns experience.

(4) Superman for the 21st century---high-tech gadgets? cynical showboating? How about positive masculinity: the courage to speak truth to power, protect the vulnerable, do what is best for others, even if it puts at risk one's own desires and safety. As opposed to--a drunk driver in a speeding car running down a pedestrian on the sidewalk and blaming the pedestrian (e.g., the Wall Street SOP).

The 21st century needs Superman, and Brandon Routh is Superman for the 21st century.

To AvengerHawkeye,

You should read all the reviews by professional film critics for Superman Returns. You'll find large majority of them were very positive about Brandon Routh as new Superman, including the reviews that was not very keen on the film itself.
Let's not talk as if you represent 'the real Superman fans' because you are not and please stop mixing your personal view up with the fact. There are lots of 'Superman fans' , many of them life-long fans, who welcomed Routh as their new Superman.

I love the call to arms echoed by either side in their various home bases. "Guys be careful, the apologists are out and about, let us put a stop to it." "Oh no, the haters are attacking full force, let's regroup."

I'm wondering why Variety and Hollywood Reporter aren't all over this knowing the response and hits they would get if they were indeed the ones to clean it all up.

""I do think you could probably take Superman into some other areas today. I think maybe it's ready to break the mold slightly and bring a little greater sense of reality into it. Not contemporizing it to like today. Just making the heavies -- and the situation that is the tension piece -- a little more broken away from the comic-book character. It would take some tricky writing, some good acting and some good directing."

Bryan Singer's 2006 film, "Superman Returns," felt like a valentine to the Donner work on Superman and the older director received it with fondness. "I totally enjoyed it. I saw it just that once. I went to the theater not knowing anything. Bryan and I had spoken many times before but I didn't want to know anything about the film. I went as the audience. And I thought, 'Wow, he really nailed it.' There's that one scene, when that piano slid across the floor on the boat? I was startled. It was great."

What would Donner like to see next for the Last Son of Krypton? He didn't hesitate. "I'd like to see Geoff Johns take a crack at the Superman...I think he would be startling. Did you read his comics? There it is. It's there on paper." Johns is a star writer in comics, of course, but before that, the Detroit native worked in Donner's office as an assistant to the filmmaker. Once again, Donner thinks the smart way to do business is to put a premium on loyalty and good ideas. "The studio hasn't gone to him and said, 'Give us a screenplay.' That would be the smart thing to do, but that's show biz. Right? Show biz, that's our life.""

From Richard Donner's interview with the LA Times.

Yeah, keep deluding yourselves into thinking BJ Routh is going to stink-up the big screen as Singerman again. Jesus.

No one who claims to "like" Singerman Peeps is a REAL Superman fan, and the comments above PROVE this. "i wonot go see da swooperman mofie if da brenda ruth is not do swooperman. he da bestest eva n soooo taluntid dat he have not star in n e oder mofie since da singerman peeps!!".

Try to deny it all you want, Apologists. Your OWN WORDS betray your ignorant selves.

^^It's very disappointing to see someone calling themselves a Superman fan being rude and aggressive all the time towards other Superman fans. You do not emulate any of the ideals that Superman embodies, a true fan feel and act as Superman would do, your posts confirm that you share none of those qualities.

Well TrueBlue, I'm NOT going to apologize for me not being a weak-kneed sissy like YOU. I WOULD say YOU have more in "common" with Supergirl, but even SHE isn't a WIMP. Come back when you grow your first "curlies", kid. Let the big-people talk.

BJ Routh is done. I know it will take you "fair weather" Singerman fans an official casting announcement from the NEW creative team to accept this FACT. It's coming though, don't you worry....

Your lack of maturity really shows in your posts when you're unable to make a civil comment and your posts reflect that, judging by all the name calling, you still haven't grown up from the school yard.

Good to see Batman and Superman mingling with Legendary and Warner Bros though...

Brandon Routh MUST return as Superman.

He did an amazing job in "Superman Returns" and deserves another shot at the role. Personally, I'm hoping for an actual SEQUEL not a reboot...but whatever happens I hope Brandon is back!

There's an easy solution. DC Comics did a story where the Justice League met the Justice Lords.

In an alternate reality, Lex Luthor was elected President of the United States. Superman killed him to prevent a nuclear war that would have destroyed the Earth, and then brought in super-villains to form a World Dictatorship.

In this concept, Tom Welling would be Kal-El, just as in the TV series. And Brandon Routh would be the Justice Lord Superman, who shares a history and knows all of Clark's secrets. Is there any fan who wouldn't show up to see Welling and Routh argue whether using heat vision to lobotomize a criminal is an abuse of super-powers?

I am astounded by those Tom Welling supporters who say Brandon Routh could not be in a reboot, but Welling could - even without it being a sequel to Smallville. It's the same thing. But why would Warner Bros. want to do Smallville the Movie when the ratings for Smallville aren't exactly great.
And Anne, I am disappointed in you. I thought you were a better journalist than this. Like an actor playing a gay role is something that is supposed to matter to anyone? And Routh isn't a "boy." How derogatory do you need to be?

Well said, Sean.
I suppose TW fans wouldn't mind if people who saw a new film with TW as Superman think Superman and Lois Lane and Lex Luthor have been all friends since they were teens.

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117994111.html?categoryid=38&cs=1&nid=2562"

COOLNESS!! A World Finest film with these two would be THE BEST MOVIE EVER!! Christian and Brandon are Bats and Supes to me. Period.

Routh IS Superman in the same way Welling IS young Clark Kent. There's no escaping or avoiding that. More importantly, he (Routh) has brought NEW fans in so I don't think one small cameo as a gay character will hurt him, especially if he's good in the role.
He is Superman. Even if he is eventually replaced, he IS Superman. Just like Chris Reeve or all the other actors were Superman during and after playing the character.
And what's the gay thing about in this 'article'? Did a former Superman making out with the current Alfred make him any less Superman to the world?

^^Excellent post!!! Well said Vivid.

Well, Chris Reeve did it, and I still admire him, who cares, they're actors, it hasn't change my mind about wanting to see BR back in tights. And I'll totally freak out if he did a World Finest with Bale. Awesome sauce!!!!

I don't care if he is a gay or not, because I'll never have him in my arms and I'll never make love with him...I Wish ...hahahaha!!
But I think that he made a great job, and now he is Superman to me, I can't even think in another actor for it.
BRING ROUTH BACK, WELLING IS SO SKINNY...
KISSES TO THE GAY OR NOT GAY.
