First Look: Twilight's Pattinson as Dali in Little Ashes

01

All those teens in love with Rob Pattinson as the dishy Edward Cullen in Twilight may be in for a surprise when they see his next: the arty Bohemian romp Little Ashes, in which he stars as the young painter Salvador Dali--in love with poet Federico García Lorca (Javier Beltran). MTV has a photo gallery on the film, due in 2009.

Here's an early clip:

Beltran looks great from that clip. The way he looks at Dali is beautiful.

Wonderful clip. Great to see Rob Pattinson get a good script. I love his accent in it. There's a lot of chemistry between the two of them. I liked that subtle lean in to one another.

Loving Rob's accent in that clip. I've read some reviews from people who saw the film in London and Rob and javier are clearly wonderful in it. Cant wait to see it. Isnt it lovely to see Rob have a decent role rather than the rubbish that is Twilight. Shows how good he is with a good script and decent director.

Someone posted these tantelising comments on Live Journal about the film:-

I can't imagine it is easy for any of us to imagine a fascist Spain where homosexuality is a death-worthy sin, I couldn't before the film started but the filming and the quality of acting is so far beyond anything I hoped for and I was transported immediately. At no point from beginning to end did I feel detached from the action, I felt every second.
I will not give too much of the story away but those of you who know about the lives of Salvador Dali and Frederico Garcia Lorca will probably have a good idea how it goes.
The passion between Robert Pattinson playing Dali and Javier Beltran as Lorca is wonderful, when they are happy you can't help but smile with them and when they are tense you will be gripping the armrests of your chair.

--
I have two favourite scenes which I thought captured the torturous and yet exciting feelings that the leads were successfully attempting to portray. The first is when they were riding bicycles and playing on the beach, the ease the fun in there relationship before they had crossed the physical line was picture perfect romance, truly heartwarming even though the whole time you knew it could never end well. My second favourite scene is when Lorca goes to visit Dali in a hotel 8 years after they parted under awkward circumstances. You can actually feel Lorca's pain at seeing Dali hide under affections and exaggerated eccentricity and at the same time feel Dali's need to just push his guard down and grab the only person he's every really loved.
The final scene of Dali with the black paint (no I wont go into any more detail than that it would ruin it!) is cinematic genius, so powerful and moving.
---
Whilst the quality of acting is remarkable throughout this is a scene where the genius of the filming takes centre stage. It begins with a dark cloudy night with Dali and Lorca jumping out of a rowing boat into the ocean. It's so dark they can barely see each other, but then the moon comes out and the whole scene is transformed, both characters look ethereal in the moonlight. The filming follows them as the twist around in the water, it films them from below and above until you can barely tell who's who, in the same way they feel themselves becoming one they become one in the eyes of the audience too.
Under the moonlight they share their first kiss, all pretence dropped they are entirely themselves. It is one of the most romantic scenes I have seen. When it cuts back to the scene later in the film there is a powerful feeling of longing for the simple beauty which they shared that night, one which they both know they can never return to.
---
The sex scene is secondarily about sensuality and it is there, but it is a magnificent scene because the sensuality comes second to the acknowledgement that each of the three characters is suffering in their own personal hell. Dali's eyes are filled with tears and he struggles to understand his powerful reaction to what he is witnessing, Margarita is finally getting the man she wants but feels like she is being used, a toy in someone else's love affair, and Lorca hates himself for using a woman he knows loves and respect him to express his love for another.

The performances look amazing. You can feel the tension between the two.

This movie should get wide release. Honestly that minute clip has me more excited than Twilight ever did.

I've chatted with a girl online who has seen this film and she cant stop gushing about it. Adores it and Rob and Javier's performances. Javier has the larger part but my friend only had eyes for Rob.

I'm so happy that Rob's got a good role after the cobblers that is Twilight. I really wish they werent doing any more of that claptrap. He can do so much better. Still cant wait for him to film Parts per Billion with Olivia Thirlby. Little Ashes looks awesome and I'm loving the accent. He looks beautiful.

Well I'm an older fan (my teen years well behind me) and I cant wait to see this. He does have a lot of older fans. I saw the other clips fo him in this and I loved his arrival at the university. What an outfit! Excellent acting from him.

I've seen How To Be and Twilight. Rob's performance was great in both. I'm really looking forward to his future projects. He has considerable talent, but I still think it is too early to consider myself a true "fan." However, if these LA clips are true indictors of what he is capable of on screen, then I think it will be safe to assume he has won me over.

Rob's performance looks fantastic. I am much much more excited about this film than Twilight. I hope its released in a decent amount of screens and that he does plenty of press for it.

Ive been a fan of Rob's since his TV performances. He always seems surprised people clocked them. I love his performance in the Haunted airman. Twilight is garbage and beneath him to be honest. Actors need good directors and a script he didnt get that in Twilight thats for sure. Little Ashes looks fantastic and from what I've he's going to be wonderful as Dali.

I saw the film in London at Raindance and Pattinson exceeded my expectation and is very convincing as Dali and as the film progresses he grows into the Dali we think we know.Pattinson and Beltran both give very intense performances and you totally buy into the Dali/Lorca relationship. The actors had great chemistry with one another. The sexual aspects of the story are handled beautifully. The scene between Pattinson and Beltran in the moonlit waters is so incredibly beautiful and it probably ranks as the most gorgeous looking scene I've ever seen. The cinematographer on this film needs a pat on the back as does the composer and costume designer. The scene where Dali watches Lorca make love to Magdalena sounds titilating but actually is a heartbreaking moment and Pattinson is incredible. The growing fascination between Lorca and Dali is beautfully played out and the script has obviously been crafted with care and attention. The director deserves much praise for handling this film with such tact and sensitivity and I hope it gets picked up for a decent cinema release.I wont spoil the end for people but its particularly tragic and Pattinson really shines in this key moment.

Rob is totally brilliant in Little Ashes. I'm annoyed that people now know him for something thats not worthy of his talent instead of all his wonderful work. Irritating. I always knew Twilight wouls be a poisoned chalice. I hope his manageent are using Little Ashes as an example of what he's capable of. The guy's very talented.

Thank you so much for covering Little Ashes for us! I'm most excited for this movie to come out next year. Hopefully it will be in theaters here in the US. That would be amazing. That clip was epic. I think this movie is going to do wonders for Rob's career. I know Twilight got him a lot of attention and grew his fan base. But I think this film will shut up all the naysayers. It will be great!

Again thank you Variety for the clip. Please keep us up to date, anything Robert Pattinson.

I loved it! I cannot wait for Little ashes to be released. He's a truly talented versatile actor, I can't wait for the world to see that he isn't just another pretty face going along with the motions, growing with the teen hype. This guy has actual talent to back up all the buzz surrounding him.

He was amazing! I'm so glad he's getting so much attention. Not just because it's going to help him with future jobs but because it's really going to help "Little Ashes" get the attention it deserves. Thanks for the clip!!

This made me very happy. I've been anticipating this movie for a while now. But that clip put my anticipation on over drive. I want to see it. NOW. Robert is a man of many talents. He has something all these actors getting more attention than deserved have, he has bucket loads of talent. This is why he will be around a very long time.

I think I've seen everything Rob has been in up to this point, with the exception of "Little Ashes". I've become a huge fan of his. All of the roles he takes on are completely different and meaningful. None are done half assed. He puts a lot of work and effort into them, and it shows on screen. I'm crazy excited for this movie to be released. He's a great actor.

I can't wait to see "Little Ashes". It looks fantastic! And you can tell from this clip alone that Robert Pattinson's acting will be phenomenal in this movie.

I love how all those who have left comments here are women!

Actually you are wrong Rose I'm a man who appreciates Rob's talent.

Thank you for posting an audience member's review of Little Ashes. I'm looking forward to this film and the performances of the two leads: Javier Beltran and Robert Pattinson. From the small clips that I've seen, I think Robert has done a good job of showing Dali's shyness and his need to provoke and push boundaries. Javier's Lorca seems like a sensitive and kind man, who in the end, lived a more honest life than Dali.

While I enjoyed Twilight and though Robert looked wonderful in the film, I'm just as interested in seeing his other work outside of Twilight. I just think he is so fresh and unique. I look forward to his future films.

awwh yay!
he is such an amazing actor :)
and Little Ashes is going to get ALOT of fame because Rob's in it xD
but thats good, because this movie deserves it.
plus its going to boost Spunks career even MORE! :)

I cant stop laughing whenever i hear people use spunk in a serious way. Do you know what it means in English slang? Chalk it up to Pattinsons limey wit.

Rob got the name Spunk from the book Money by Martin Amis. Rob loves that book and would love to play the lead character one day in a film version. Spunk Davis is one of the smaller characters in the book.

this is going to be an amazing role for rob but he is also extremely amazing in twilight. so all you twilight haters need to SHUT UP.

Rob as Dali? I don't see that, but I am sure he is excellent in the movie. I love Rob, believe in his talent, and would watch him in a shoe ad. I have a hard time believing that the film will be an accurate portrayal of Dali. He was a cruel pompous asshole, opportunist.

Rob is so cool. He was a dazzling Edward. Twilight rocked. He went Ben Barnes and acted with a Spanish accent, and it was cool. He is a man of many accents. Hehe. I loved Twilight. I want to see How To Be and Little Ashes.

I think this film is about Dali's early years at university, before he became really famous, and a cruel, pompous asshole, opportunist. Apparently he eventually became a caricature, and a buffoon, which overshadowed his art...which is sad.

I need to get a good biography about Dali before seeing this. Does anyone have a suggestion?

I think it's nice to see that's he's trying his hand in unique films to show his versatility, but you have to admit a lot of people wouldn't be interested in this movie if it weren't for twilight which he did very well in also. His career has practically just started. No one thought he'd be good as Edward and look at how he's changed their minds. He also seems like a great person and humble which is pretty amazing considering... I just pray he stays that way!

I'm excited to see Robert in something new. He's a talented actor capable of playing many versatile and complex roles. Little Ashes is probably going to be a splendid film.

I read somewhere that Robert Pattinson got a hold of some of the writings from the letters that were written back and forth between Dali and Lorca. He said he had read the book Dali had written but it gave him little insight into the REAL Dali beneath the crazy eccentric mask. He said the letters gave him much more insight.

I love Robert's vulnerability the most. And in real life he has so much charisma. It's not just his beautiful bone structure. He's got "IT".
debra

I agree he has that undefinable star quality. He makes me happy and I've read comments from others who say the same. I am not a teen by the way.

The film looks fantastic. I know from reading reviews that Rob gives a very brave performance. I expect nothing less of him as he's always given performances that are not what you expect. Nothing predictable or off the shelf from him.

The new Little ashes website is up and running and they have a widget too.

Lots of lovely images and video clips on there.

I was pleasantly amazed when I saw the trailer for Little Ashes and realized that it was Robert Pattinson playing Dali. We haven't seen much of him, besides in Harry Potter and Twilight, but I enjoy his style of acting. I think that with this film, he is going to be able to go even further, so I think this is great for his career.

It´s hilarious and pathetic how all the women want to push Pattinson as a talented actor. I saw the film in London and it´s really a lame one. Pattinson proves once more that he has NO acting skills but the blinded idiots WANTS to push the idiocy to the ones who really like good films. He´s at his best, the next Orlando Bloom. Laughable, really.
