I really enjoyed HENRY POOLE IS HERE.
Also, a little doc called THE FIRST SATURDAY IN MAY was great. Still think about it.

Wow, I didn't have to scroll past "Ba" to find my two (and only) favorites of the year (so far): APPALOOSA and THE BANK JOB. (Not that I've seen much beyond those and some of the more high-profile must-see-in-order-to-join-the-conversation superhero and franchise films of the year.) Next up: TRANSPORTER 3! :D

This list is in order of excellence right?
I mean just because it's also alphabetical doesn't make it not true.
With Variety's 'top of the list' endorsement, therefore,
I herewith announce Able Danger's candidacy for an Academy Award in Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography as well as Best Actor: Adam Nee Best Actress: Elina Lowensohn.

I'm a huge Appaloosa fan. I suspect actors dig the virtues of this character study beautifully directed by Ed Harris, who is delicious in the western opposite Rene Zellwegger and Viggo Mortensen, who could be a contender for supporting actor. But somehow I'm not feeling the love.

It may be a tad early, but feel free to submit your ten best lists here. You can always file new ones later.

I didn't realize SILENT LIGHT ever got an official release. It's definitely one of my favorites this year.
Also, are you considering 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS, AND 2 DAYS a 2007 film? It's official release date was in 2008. Ditto HUNGER and GOMORRAH, whose official release dates (not counting Academy runs) are in 2009.
Posted by: Matthew Lucas | December 07, 2008 at 03:18 PM
Local critics tend to use the dates that a film was released in their town. But for me, in L.A., I use the year the film was in contention for awards. So 4 Months is 2007. And Hunger and Gomorra are 2008.

Add another film to my short list (after APPALOOSA and THE BANK JOB): PUNISHER WAR ZONE. If you loved PLANET TERROR (from last year's GRINDHOUSE), and I did, you'll love this one, too. It's got very black humor, over-the-top gore and violence, inspired lunacy throughout and a heightened visual imagination. It's everything THE DARK KNIGHT wasn't, with super-demented psychotic villains who never bother with the silly and contrived mind games the Joker did. The villains here are just flat-out gleeful homicidal maniacs out to get the Punisher and are played by actors who are totally believable in the roles. They pose quite a formidable challenge to the title hero, which generates a great deal of suspense. The overall look and feel of the film reminded me more of an EC comic than Marvel and offers a nightmarish comic book alternate universe New York. (If you want realism, go rent SERPICO!)
This film would have been an instant 42nd Street classic 30 years ago, in the tradition of THE WARRIORS and the original ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13. Unfortunately, it's not finding its audience. Lionsgate released it in a crowded marketplace, already covered by the likes of QUANTUM OF SOLACE and TRANSPORTER 3. They should have waited till February.
And where are the critics who will champion a film like this? The way James Agee and Manny Farber used to champion Val Lewton's films or some of the controversial film noir classics of yore at a time when The New York Times' Bosley Crowther was decrying the effects of those films on impressionable minds (like his own?). And A.O. Scott seems to be following in Crowther's steps today, not Agee's or Farber's (or even the Times' own Roger Greenspun).

I'm working on a list of Austin-related movies from 2008 (shot here, filmmakers live here, etc.) and your list was very helpful. I didn't see "Baghead," the Duplass brothers' film released by SPC, on here -- wouldn't that count for 2008?
