Oscar Watch: Button, Frost/Nixon Lead BAFTA Long List
I'm happy to see support for the Coens' Burn After Reading, which has been shortchanged stateside by awards givers for two reasons: 1) folks fail to appreciate that comedy is hard and 2) the Coens won the best picture last year for No Country for Old Men. The thinking seems to be, "enough already." Burn After Reading was a hit, too. It may contribute in a sidelong way to the fortunes of Brad Pitt, who is vying for a best actor Oscar nom for Benjamin Button--his hilarious comic turn for the Coens could enhance his Oscar chances. In what promises to be a tight race for BAFTA gold this year, nine films boast 10 or more longlist noms. "Slumdog Millionaire," "The Reader," "Revolutionary Road," "Changeling" and "The Dark Knight" boast 13 noms apiece, and "Milk" and "Burn After Reading" sport 11.
In the supporting actor category, Brit thesp Ralph Fiennes is nommed three times ("The Reader," "In Bruges" and "The Duchess"). Others with multiple acting noms are Kate Winslet, up for lead actress for "The Reader" and "Revolutionary Road"; Meryl Streep, for leads in "Mamma Mia!" and "Doubt"; John Malkovich, for supporting roles in "Changeling" and "Burn After Reading"; and Tilda Swinton for supporting turns in "Benjamin Button" and "Burn After Reading."
