Twilight Sequels Heating Up
Don't believe everything you hear about Twilight and its sequels. Things are heating up already on the third installment, Eclipse. They haven't even started the second one yet, New Moon.
When you've got a robust franchise, filmmakers are eager to get on board. Word is, the Spanish director of The Orphanage, Juan Antonio Bayona, and 3:10 to Yuma helmer James Mangold are both circling the project, but Summit insists that no meetings are scheduled as yet. Both would be strong choices.
As to the last two unfilled roles in New Moon, vampires Jane and Aro, no offers have yet gone out, despite what you may have read. And the role of Leah Clearwater isn't being filled, because according to writer Melissa Rosenberg, she isn't in the script!

Thank you for the accurate updates. Nothing like the rampant rumours out there!

do you know if it's true Vanessa Hudgens is going to be in the sequel?
Barf.

Now THAT'S interesting...
Posted by: Wray | January 14, 2009 at 08:43 PM
she was the one who supposedly auditioned for the Leah role that doesn't exist.
Posted by: anne Thompson | January 14, 2009 at 09:36 PM
"...albino gay dude from wilight..." Huh? You mean, Rob Pattinson? OK!
Thanks for the update. I guess Chris isn't directing Eclipse. I feel sorry for that HSM Hudgens girl after the EW article, and subsequent outcry that followed...especially since the story of her audition isn't even true. Twilight fans are a rabid bunch, man. I really like the books, but my word. I hope they get Bayona. The Orphanage was an AMAZING film.

Anne do you know if Rob pulled out of Parts Per Billion purely because of timing. There were rumours that his management wanted him out as they are focusing more on big budget movies. Also any chance that he'll have time to do other work this year of will Eclipse take up the rest of the year. If so that depresses me as I'd rather see him in other roles.

Many thanks for the update. Either director would be a good choice. I do hope they've found a way of including more of Rob Pattinson in New Moon as the book drags in the mid section. Bella moping and Jacob fixing motorbikes isnt my idea of interesting material for film. I'd far rather get to see Edward's mental disintegration at leaving Bella and his visit to the Volturi. Even some back story of Edward's difficult time when he was first a vampire and left the Cullen household to feed off humans.

A tragedy that everyone blindly followed the empty hype and rushed to 'Twilight' and avoided the far superior (on every level) 'Let the Right One In'.
It's 'The Lost Boys' vs 'Near Dark' all over again...

Let's not forget that Twilight(the movie)has the benefit of the extremely devoted built-in fan base of the books who made the film a success in order to ensure that the rest of the book trilogy could be made. Most of these fans went to see the movie, often more than once, out of loyalty to their beloved story - not due to any hype by Summit or anyone else. Many of these fans were not satisfied with the movie as it turned out, but they made it a success anyway, hoping that the next one would be an improvement. These fans should not be belittled as blindly following anything - these people know what they want and are attempting to wield their power as consumers. I think that's pretty impressive for the (mostly) young people who make up this fan base.
Posted by: Wray | January 15, 2009 at 08:21 AM
Folks, Twilight is a bona-fide franchise now, with over $287Million worldwide. It would be fair to say that the fan base goes beyond the young adult group. And they definitely know what they want in the movies, especially New Moon. They do not want random scenes that were not part of the book and they want good acting from the major talent.
Ramesh, Rob Pattinson wouldn't say anything condescending about you.
I totally agree with Anne that he has a solid future in films. He's a supremely talented actor and refreshingly unassuming.
Posted by: Arthur Stein | January 15, 2009 at 03:15 PM
I'm not sying anything condescending about Rob Pattinson(that takes ...analysis), Im saying something downright mean about him. Im saying he's overrated and despite the best efforts of mothers all over the super...white world, he's no harry potter....or hannah montana.
Maybe he should make a disney musical or something...

Here Here! MarkJ. I have seen the film 3 times and it had nothing to do with how good the movie was. In fact, I thought the movie was downright cheesy and badly scripted in places which I found very disappointing.
I have seen the movie multiple times because I have formed a bond with the story and I really enjoyed seeing the characters come to life. I loved being taken to the locations, hearing the voices and watching the idiosyncrasies that the actors portray onscreen on behalf of the Twilight characters.
I am hoping that they do New Moon more justice than the Twilight movie, but sadly I am far from confident. Having said this, no doubt I will see New Moon multiple times also for the same reasons I mention above.

oops! sorry, I meant to cheer Wray for their comments, not Markj :)
Posted by: k@ren | January 15, 2009 at 06:29 PM
Everybody was bagging so hard on Vanessa Hudgens, but IMO a lot of that was jealousy over her having Zac Efron. Teen girls are mean, mean, mean! It's true. Vanessa is a cutiepie and I wouldn't mind if she did show up in a Twilight movie one day.
Posted by: Mostly happy! | January 15, 2009 at 11:01 PM
id do her.
Posted by: Ramesh | January 16, 2009 at 12:11 AM
Oh go on K@ren, you know you want to cheer my comment too.
Posted by: markj | January 16, 2009 at 01:31 AM
@ Wray:
I think those people should be belittled. By supporting a movie which, at best, had the production value and acting skills of a bad TV movie and thereby ensuring the financial success of the picture they are also ensuring that more bad movies get made. 'Tis a shame. We need more good blockbuster films, not more bad ones.
Posted by: markj | January 16, 2009 at 01:38 AM
Ramish,
Pattinson is overrated already at 22 years of age? I'm sorry, but that's absurd.
Posted by: pwrgirl | January 16, 2009 at 07:03 AM
Sorry. RAMESH.
TWILIGHT isn't in the Bollywood-vein (cough), but I really liked it.
Posted by: pwrgirl | January 16, 2009 at 07:16 AM
Thanks for the update Anne. I definitely think Twilight could have been better. I still enjoyed it for the most part. I think New Moon will benefit from the new director. I do think Rob Pattinson was quite a find. I'd love to see him in other things outside of Twilight, but I know it will occupy his time for awhile.
Posted by: Shaun | January 16, 2009 at 08:21 AM
pwrgrl,
how old was britney spears when she was overrated?
Posted by: Ramesh | January 16, 2009 at 08:51 AM
but twilight WAS in the bollywood vein! theyre both inspired by 19th century gothic romances.
Posted by: Ramesh | January 16, 2009 at 08:53 AM
Thank you for the updates! I like both options for directors, but specially like Juan Antonio Bayona for this. Even though I didn't like the Twilight movie much at first, I have found I keep getting pulled back in. I love the story and the energy. I think New Moon is a great part of the story, very dramatic, I hope they do it justice. Eclipse will be nice too, I hope they show the funny comments and situations that involve a couple that has been together for a while. But the movie I'm really looking forward for is the last book Breaking Dawn. To the people who don't like it, I guess its just not your thing. We don't know why we are attracted to some thing or person, we just are. It eighther makes you feel or it doesn't, to bad it does nothing to you. Guys are more visual and to the point, girls usually are interested in the setting, the story, the thrill, the foreplay. The book feels very personal, I have to say I didn't put myself in her shoes, but loved to live every minute with her. It reminded me of my own love. I hope the next movies don't forget about the close ups to the looks and unspoken gestures, besides getting the right visual effects.
P.S. Robert Pattinson exudes charisma!

pace,
youre a dude, aren't you!

Posted by: kjersti krueger | January 16, 2009 at 10:57 AM
i hope they pick someone good for jane and not some completly bad actor that doesn't even fit her profile
Posted by: nicole | January 16, 2009 at 11:26 AM
for all you that are wondering aboutwhy i find this a rediculous overrated film, imagine this plot
white as lilly girl's mother sends her to inner city detroit to a new high school. she meets an indian guy whose dad, a seven eleven employee who keeps saying thank you come again, fixes her up with a car. there she meets this meth addict kid who lets on to her that his addiction means he will die before he is thirty, but until then, she can orgasm as many times as she wants with him. he also happens to be black and is generously endowed. His gang is filled with people that want to rape her, but she trusts him.
There's a rival gang that has this ideology that the should find kill loot and rape white people. one of the rival gang members spot your daughter....sorry, sorry,..the heroine of this film....
Twilight, for you, cast "multiculturally"
Posted by: Ramesh | January 16, 2009 at 01:22 PM
I wish I could be Jane. I would be great for it! But I live in Australia and they're not casting here. :(
Posted by: Liz | January 16, 2009 at 03:42 PM
ummm excusse me Arthur Stein?? I agree with everyone repraising you (if you even know what that means...sorry better include deffinision...do not like your stupid attitude!) no one asked for you reproach! and for your information Rob Pattinson put his whole carrer on the line to try to get this role (not that you would understand that. im a actor myself i should know.) and he went threw a lot of mental anguish so i dont think you have a right to crizise unless you think you can get up there and do it your self! man i loath haters like you! its enough for the critiques to hate on us but stupid jocks who have never read a chapter book in there life just cross the line. stop waisting you time. your not changing a Twilighters oppinion. go educate yourself. do something productive with your time.

Vanessa Hudgens should never appear in ANY MOVIE related to Twilight. jane. Dakota fanning? JOHNNY DEPP could be aro but im not sure if i like his high profile in this movie.

Vanessa hgens would be Ideal! she has good experience starring in straigh to DVD sequels(HSM2)
hehe (this is fun)
Posted by: Ramesh | January 17, 2009 at 03:45 PM
Where are they fliming the movie at...and does anyone know about the casting area...
Posted by: Kelly | January 17, 2009 at 07:35 PM
I have read all four books and the on-line draft of Midnight Sun. I have seen the movie several times, and have pre-ordered the DVD. I'm a grandmother who hasn't been a teen ager for many, many, years. I had seen "Bella" in Panic Room a few years ago, but didn't remember her. I had never heard of Rob Pattinson. I think it was very smart to use basically unknown actors, and I think they should continue this in the sequals. No one went to see Twilight because of the "star" power, and to recruit star power for the sequals would only detract from the story. I guess I'm saying, "it ain't broke, so don't fix it"!
Posted by: jay jay | January 17, 2009 at 10:36 PM
So, no one has applied for Jane and Aro, or they just haven't found anyone? I know I could pull off Jane, but im not a professional. They are shooting the movie in Portland, Oregon and Italy.

loved pattinson & stewart in twilight & can't wait for new moon. just know it will be improved w/ the new budget. thankful my teen made we aware of meyer's novels...as they were addicting & an escape. can't say much for the perfume twilight @ hot topic...freesia & lavendar sounds great but does not smell great. settled for a t-shirt. i really hope director weitz does justice to new moon. heard they were filming in vancouver & italy.

I think it would stupid for summit to sign up a brand new director- what if chris is more successful than anyone could have ever have imagined? I think these rumors are flying everywhere b/c we're all so desperate for new news .. Give us new Twilight news (or a Rob pattinson sighting!)

OMG...! VANESSA HUDGENS should NEVER EVER appear in any movie related to TWILIGHT...! ( agreeing with RAMESH)
She should just stick with those Disney Musicals....! Don't get me wrong, i am NOT a hater, i just don't think that she can make through a VAMPIRE movie..Let alone play the part convincingly.(doing the role of Jane) she'll totally be ruining it.A better choice would be Dakota Fanning.
i've read, that the producers handed Dakota Fanning the Part of Jane the Italian Vulturi vampire, without even an audition.. And the deal is almost signed, they are just working on the numbers....
YOu could check it out for yourself... here's the site:

oh come on , im not that much of a crank! ( i am? oh well!) hehe
vanessa hudgens is too sweet to be a vampire. wish she'd hook up with pattinson , tho. they'd be magic together, and a whole universe of teenage girls would send bad vibes in their direction , that it would slay me.
Posted by: Ramesh | January 25, 2009 at 08:47 AM
Look yeah .. Vanessa can't act yeah she's pretty but she is no were as good as Bella, Rob & Kristen are ment to be not Vanessa , Vanessa can't play Leila because she isn't wolf material. If they do put her in Twilight they are making a massive mistake..
