If it wasn’t for adversity, Salma Hayek may have been at Promises in Malibu instead of the Beverly Hilton Tuesday night where she was honored by the Women in Film. When accepting the evening's Lucy Award, the actor-producer spoke about how extremely difficult it was for her to find work as a thesp when she first moved to the U.S. but says she is now grateful for the many obstacles she encountered.
“I want to thank adversity among everything because if I had been white and beautiful and funny and smart, but not too smart, and talented, I would have just been an actress getting one role after another and I would have made a lot of money and probably gotten into drugs and been very, very miserable. Instead, I couldn’t get a job to save my life. I had to learn how to write, produce and look outside the box for a way to express my creativity.”
Hmm... I'm not sure I understand Ms. Hayek comment about if being white, beautiful, smart, funny would have caused her to have experienced a bland career and drugs and rehab. There are plenty of artists out there who struggled everyday that are intelligent, funny, smart and of many different ethnicities that are successfull without resorting to drugs to manage their dreams. Some would think her comment is in bad taste especially if it had been labelled with a different ethnicity.
