The elementary school: a potential backchannel?

As Art Linkletter sagely observed, kids really do ask the darndest questions.

In this case, a 7-year-old boy decided to ask "How much money do you make?" of Phil Rosenthal, show runner for "Everybody Loves Raymond," during a Wednesday morning visit of two elementary school classes to the picket line at Paramount.

Rosenthal responded by explaining the outlines of the structure of his deal. Another student among the 30 from Larchmont Charter School asked Rosenthal why he was on strike.

"If I did a job, I want to be paid for it," was the response.

The students left behind letters of appreciation for the writers. One read, "Dear writers, I hope you win. I am in the first grade. I am 6. How much did you get and how much did you want? Love, Ian."

Hi Dave,
Phil Rosenthal here. I really didn't outline the structure of my deal to the little 7 year old. Maybe you thought I was serious because I was shvitzing in the hot sun today. And to the other question I responded, "If you did a job would you want to be paid for it?" For the record, the child responded, "You bet your sweet ass".
